Storm Claudia Impact: Clean-up Efforts Continue as Cold Snap Approaches

Emergency crews are still working to address extensive inundation caused by the passing severe weather.

A major incident was announced in the town of Monmouth, southeastern Wales, where residents were safely removed from waterlogged homes after heavy downpours on Friday.

On Sunday, four severe alerts, warning of life-threatening conditions, were still in effect, alongside dozens of alerts across England. River levels on the Monnow River surpassed previous records, topping levels seen during past storms.

Residences, commercial properties, transport networks, and energy infrastructure all suffered from major water inundation in parts of Wales, officials confirmed.

Reports indicated that around 20 properties in parts of England were flooded due to the severe conditions, such as properties in the Cumbria region.

As Storm Claudia withdraws, a cold snap is expected to sweep across the United Kingdom, bringing freezing temperatures and potential snow and ice.

Saturday night, the UK experienced its coldest night since late March, with mercury readings dropping to -7C in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland.

A decline of around 5C will shift unseasonably warm autumn temperatures to single digits nationwide, with peak temperatures on Sunday at about 11C in the southeastern region before further cooling at the week's beginning.

"As Storm Claudia moves south, atmospheric pressure to the north-west will drive a cold northerly flow across the country," a meteorologist stated. "This will bring significantly chillier weather than recently, and, though mostly dry, there is also a potential of wintry hazards. Widespread frosts are expected, with temperatures falling as low as -7C in certain locations next week, and daytime highs staying in the single digits."

He added, "Couple this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a significant wind chill. This marks a significant shift after a prolonged spell of unseasonable warmth."

Public health agencies have activated a warning for low temperatures for parts of the Midlands and northern England from Monday, while environmental agencies have warned that flooding may continue throughout the weekend.

The cold weather alert is effective from 8am Monday until Friday morning, including the eastern Midlands, western Midlands, North East, northwest, and Yorkshire and The Humber.
