Tuchel Criticizes Home Crowd Support Despite Dominant Wales Victory.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his sadness that the Three Lions team did not get stronger backing from the Wembley spectators during their commanding triumph over Wales on Thursday night.
The manager was satisfied to see his side showcase their strong performance, with finishes from Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the initial stages effectively ending the contest. However, he was displeased with the mood at the iconic venue.
“We had limited sessions to prepare against a well-trained team and we performed excellently,” Tuchel remarked. “We could have been 5-0 up at half-time. We couldn’t score the fourth and fifth ones. It was quiet. There was no any energy from the crowd. We did everything to win.”
“What more can you deliver in the first quarter? We didn’t let them get away. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for 30 minutes, it’s disappointing because the squad warranted more support today.”
“I stand by my words. There’s nothing more than being 3-0 in a derby. I hoped for a little more support in moments where it is challenging.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was a bit too much support for Wales. It might have aided us to recharge, but that’s football and that is it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Display
Away from potentially starting a fight with supporters, the manager also created controversy by excluding Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden from his squad. But the decision was justified by Morgan Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and getting his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” Tuchel noted. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is competing for his place.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Improvement from Loss
The Wales manager hopes that his team, who face Belgium in a important qualifying match on Monday, take lessons from their disappointing performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this game,” the manager commented. “I need to see where we are. What are our ambitions? What is our identity? Today gives me drive.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Watkins was withdrawn at half-time after colliding with a goalpost and will be a doubt when the national team face their next opponents in the Latvian capital in a qualifier on next week.
